Express Lanes
Sometimes, there are extra perks to being TravelWise. For example, when you carpool on I-15, you can travel in the Express Lanes. These lanes are sometimes called "carpool lanes" because they are open primarily to vehicles with two or more occupants.
The Express Lanes currently span I-15 from 500 North in Salt Lake to University Parkway in Orem and from State Street in Farmington to 200 North in Kaysville. Construction is underway through summer 2010 to extend the Express Lanes from 500 North to 2300 North in Salt Lake. Construction is also underway through December 2010 to expand the Express Lanes from 200 North in Kaysville to the south Layton interchange. The I-15 corridor expansion project I-15 CORE will extend the Express Lanes further south from Lehi Main Street to U.S. 6 in Spanish Fork by 2013.
For those times when you can't carpool, you still have an option to use the Express Lanes. Beginning in the fall of 2010, solo drivers can purchase a transponder that allows them to drive in the Express Lanes without a passenger. While carpoolers still use the lane for free, the transponder deducts funds from a solo driver's online account and allows them to utilize the extra space in the Express Lanes. Ultimately, this helps traffic flow better for all of us.
