What are the benefits to me as an employee?

You can add time to your day by taking transit to work. An added bonus is your ability to relax and be comfortable while you travel in addition to saving money. While traveling to work you can respond to e-mails, review material for an upcoming meeting or read for pleasure. The cost savings to you includes not having to pay for gas, parking, maintenance, or wear and tear on your vehicle. The best reason to take transit is that your employer might be able to offer you financial incentives to do so.

What can I do?

  • Take advantage of new legislation that allows employees to deduct up to $230 per month from your gross income to pay for their mass transit commutes. Employees whose monthly mass transit fees are less than the $230 cap are allowed to deduct the full amount from their paychecks.
  • Check with your company's human resources department or transit coordinator to learn about transit benefits that they offer (if they do not provide any, direct them to www.bestworkplaces.org/pdf/transitvan_07.pdf to learn more about options available to them).
  • Check with your local transit provider to determine the service available in your area. From Brigham City to Payson, Utah Transit Authority (UTA) provides local transit options.
  • Plan your trip by using the UTA Trip Planner at www.rideuta.com.

Case Study: NOS Communications, Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas based NOS Communications subsidizes 100 percent of the cost of the transit passes and considers the passes an employee benefit that enriches its benefits package and increases employee retention. Using transit is considered an easy, stress-free, reliable and inexpensive transportation alternative for its employees to get to work. An additional benefit is that employees are more aware of air quality and traffic congestion issues in the community.
